Oyster shell refers to an oyster shell as a by-product of oyster farming. The shell in its natural, unprocessed state is approximately 8 to 14 cm long in the longitudinal direction, and is oval-shaped with a length of 3 to 7 cm and a thickness of 2 to 5 mm in the unidirectional direction. It has a shape similar to a plate.
Oyster shells are mostly calcium carbonate (CaCO3) with small amounts of MgCO3 and CaSO4. Oyster shells have a calcite structure, and when heat treated, there is no structural difference, but CO2 escapes and remains in the form of CaO.
This oyster shell is a marine resource with the same main ingredient and mineral phase as natural limestone. It is composed of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) with a calcite structure, but unlike limestone, which is a dense rock, it has a very active microstructure, making it an appropriate siliceous material. When hydrothermal reaction is used with raw materials, it can be used as a better raw material than limestone in various fields, including building materials.

Among the various fields in which oyster shells are used, the field that is currently most widely commercialized is eco-friendly oyster shell fertilizer.
Limestone substitute
The sintering process is a process of processing powdered iron ore into a sintered ore form suitable for input into a blast furnace. Adding limestone during the sintering process improves productivity in the blast furnace process and reduces fuel costs. In this process, oyster shells, which have almost similar composition to limestone, are used.
